ANNIE McCALL

LONDON SW4

Originally founded in 1885 by Dr Annie McCall, one of Britain's first female doctors, this Grade II listed former maternity hospital in Stockwell, southwest London holds significant cultural value. The site, comprising two Victorian houses and a main red-brick building, had fallen into disrepair. Previous disposal attempts by Lambeth Council had failed due to political sensitivities and unresolved tenancies with a resident artists' collective. We successfully managed stakeholder relations and navigated media interest to secure vacant possession. In collaboration with the occupiers, we constructed 16 purpose-built, income-generating artists' studios alongside 30 refined homes within and around former hospital buildings, including 9 social housing properties. The studios are still highly sought-after today, and the project achieved multi-award-winning status
