This project involved the redevelopment of a listed, 3.2-acre derelict 1960s school site, which represented one of the earliest examples of the Brutalist architectural style. A highly sensitive disposal by Lambeth Council, the site had been occupied informally by various community groups for several years. We managed all stakeholder relationships and public relations closely to ensure a smooth transition. Working in conjunction with English Heritage and The Twentieth Century Society, elements of lesser architectural merit were demolished. Balancing benefit and harm allowed for a viable scheme comprising 149 new-build and conversion homes set in landscaped grounds, alongside 40% social housing and 10,000 sq ft of community space within the original assembly hall. The development went on to become multi-award-winning.
